Inspiration for Painting

I have often been asked what inspires me to paint. In looking over my work and asking myself the same question while doing so I know that it is the light that inspires me to select a subject. I am drawn most often to dramatic lighting: a sunset, sunrise, or light raking over the landscape. The light produces grand color effects and that delights my soul as well as my eye.

"Officer's Gulch" is one example. The morning light hitting the mountains was what struck my eye while setting up to paint. There were lots of other great subjects at that site as well, but my thoughts kept coming back to that great summer  am  light.
